Summer 2014 Reading: Fantasy

Welcome to our new fourth graders! This year for our summer reading, instead of doing a written report, you have the option of participating in a discussion online. I hope this will let us all see and respond to each other's thoughts about the book.

As a reminder, you need to begin each comment with the book you read, and should write your first name only under "Comment As." You should then write down the number of the questions you are answering, followed by your answer. Later on, you should check back and respond to another student's comment.

For your fantasy book, you need to answer two of the following questions:

1. Who is the main character and how would you describe them? Are they like you at all? Why or why not?

2. What do you think are the three most important things that happen in this book? Why are these the most important?

3. What in this book happens that makes it a fantasy? List at least two things, and be specific.

4. Is the "world" that the author created one that you would like to live in? Why or why not?

  1. This is Mrs. Lindo, and I read Charlotte's Web.
    3. This book is a fantasy because pigs can't speak, and spiders can't spin words into webs.
    4. I would want to live in this world because I think it would be fun to see messages and spider webs and I like that the different animals take care of each other.

    1. This is Giselle,I agree with you Mrs. Lindo about number 4, because animals would make great best friends.Like Charlotte and the pig. In fact I wish animals were able to talk to humans, and humans would be able to talk with animals. So they can understand each other, because my dog isn't able to walk at all. Just a little bit. And she won't even drink or eat.

    2. This is Christian and I agree with Giselle. I also wish animals could talk so they could tell us what they are feeling. If animals could talk we could take better care of them and would be so cool to communicate with them. My grandparent's dog bark at me when they are happy and I wish that I could understand what they are trying to tell me.

    3. This is Elias and I read The Time Warp Trio, Summer Reading is Killing me by Jon Scieszka.

The kids in my book mentioned the book Charlotte's Web and they also find a web with a message on it.

I agree with you because I would also enjoy living in a world with mysterious messages in spider webs.

    4. Hello this is Sydney and I agree with Ms. Lindo with number 3 because animals can not speak
or spin letters in web. So none of this can happen

    5. Hi this is Aaliyah and I agree with Ms. Lindo with number 3.because animals can not speak and because spiders can not write words in webs. I also agree with number 4 because it would be nice to see messages on webs and see animals talk to each other and understand each other.

  2. This is Rosie, and I read The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. 4. I would love to live in Narnia because there are a bunch of fantasy characters there and I would love to be friends with fantasy characters. 1. Lucy is the main character. She used to live in London with her parents in London but they sent her and her siblings ( Peter, Susan, and Edmund) went to live with a professor because there was a war so her parents sent them away. I am not like her because I never lived in London, I don't have four siblings, I was never sent away from home, and I never went through a magical wardrobe that sent me to a magical place ( specifically Narnia. )

    1. This is Giselle and I agree with Rosie on number 4, because Narnia IS a magical, magical, place.

    2. There are a lot of differences between you and Lucy! Can you think of any similarities, maybe some character traits? Like, are you both curious or have big imaginations?

      Delete
    3. This is KELSEY and I disagree with Rosie on number 1. I think Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, are all the main character.

      Delete
    4. This is McKayla and I agree with Rosie on Number 1.I believe Lucy is the main character because she is the most important character.Lucy is important because she finds the wardrobe and discovers Narnia first.

      Delete
  3. My name is Priya . I read The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.
    3. One reason that it is a fantasy is that if you put on a wardrobe a magical door that leads you to another world with fantasy characters and fauns.Another reason is that there cannot be a son of Adam and
    daughter of Eve.
4.I will like to live in the world that the author made because it has
fantasy characters and because it is a mysterious world.

    1. Hello this is Giselle, and I agree with you about number 4, about Narnia being very magical, mysterious, graceful, awesome, beautiful, and a word you might not understand it is super splendiferous. SUPER SPLENDIFEROUS: MEANS A GREAT GREAT SOMETHING.

      Delete
    2. It does sound like an interesting world! Do you remember the Bible story about Adam and Eve? If they were the first people, are we all their daughters and sons? I wonder if that's what the book meant...

      Delete
    3. I disagree with you on number 4. I think that we are all Sons and Daughters of Adam and Eve which is proabaly what they are talking about. Oh and this is Kelsey!

  4. This is Giselle, and I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.2.The three most important things are: When the children [ Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy] go into a magical place called Narnia. When the children see the actual Santa Claus. When the children meet Aslan and fight in the battle against the Witch.I think these things are important because they catch the reader's attention.4, I would love to live in this world because it is very mysterious, and magical with Aslan the Great Lion.

Next thing I would like to say what happened to me when I read this story. Yesterday, I was at Portillos restaurant reading this book at the colder part of the story in the settings. Suddenly I got so cold and was shivering like crazy. I told my mom that I was cold. She asked me why.I told her maybe it was the book because I get into books like I was inside the story. The End! :] [:

    1. I love all of your comments, Giselle! I'm also excited about your enthusiasm for the book. Have you ever heard of the word empathy before? It means you can put yourself into someone else's shoes and see things through their eyes. It sounds like you're good at that!

    2. This is Giselle and thank you Mrs. Lindo for commenting me about I putting myself in other people's shoes. Thank you for telling me what empathy meant.

  5. It sounds like a lot of people are reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Did you know that C.S. Lewis, the author, was Christian? A lot of people think that in the story, Aslan is supposed to be like Jesus. Do you agree?

    1. I do agree with you Ms. Lindo.

  6. This is Christian, and I just finished reading The Time Warp Trio by Jon Scieszka. I am going to answer questions number one and three.

    1. I believe the main character of the story is Sam. Sam, his sister Anna and her cat and two friends opened a magical book and time traveled to ancient Egypt. They had a difficult time getting back home because the book disappeared. I am very different from Sam because Sam knows a lot of about magic and I do not know anything about magic. Also, he likes to take risks and be in danger and I stay away from danger. Sam has a lot of guts.

    3. No, the story cannot happen in real life, because the characters traveled back in time and time travel is definitely not real. How could people time travel just by opening a book, that is surely unreal.

    1. That's a great comparison, Christian. I always thought the books in this series were really funny. Did you? Which one did you read?

    2. Hi Mrs. Lindo, this is Christian and I read The Time Warp Trio Tut Tut No.6. At first the book was a little boring but then it started to get interesting. I did find parts of the story funny, like Anna wrapped herself in bandages and slept in a coffin like a mummy. It was a good book.

  7. This is Kelsey and I finished reading The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe.
    3. The things that are fantasy are that the animals talk. In real life, animals do not talk.
    4. I would love to live in this world because I would love tocelebrate with the fauns and explore the sandy cove.

    1. This is Gianna. I agree with Kelsey because animals actually can't talk, but it would be cool if they could.

  8. This is Gianna and I finished reading The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
    4. I would not like to live in narnia because it is always winter and I think I would get sick of the snow. Also, I would not want to stay there because the queen does not like people there.
    3. This book is fantasy is because the animals can talk and a character is half human half faun. Also, you can't enter another world through a closet, so that's why this story is fantasy and not real.

  9. This is McKayla and I read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
    1. The main character is Lucy. She is adventurous, friendly, caring and brave. Lucy is like me because she likes adventures like me. Lucy also is caring with her friends and family.
    2. The three most important things in the story are when Lucy enters the wardrobe, discovers Narnia and meets Mr.Tumnus. The second most important thing was when the children meet the Beavers so they can go see Aslan and defeat the White Witch. The third most important thing is when Edmund defeats the White Witch and it is no longer winter. The spell is broken. The witch can't turn anybody into stone. Narnia finally has new kings and queens.

  10. This is Jonathan and I read, The Mouse and the Motorcycle. I will answer questions #1 and #4.
    1. The main characters are Ralph S. Mouse and Keith Gridley. They are friendly, curious and adventurous. They are like me because I am friendly, curious and adventurous as well.
    2. I would like to change the part in the book where Ralph chewed through the bed sheets because that caused the manager to set up lots of mouse traps. Mouse traps are very bad for mice!

  11. This is Elias and I read The Time Warp Trio, No. 7, Summer Reading is Killing Me, by Jon Scieszka. I will answer questions 1 and 3.

    1. The three main characters are Sam, Joe and Fred. Sam wears glasses, has long hair, he's smart and he rides a skateboard. Joe is demanding and a planner. Fred rides a skateboard, he does tricks on his skateboard, he is fearless and he takes action. I can relate to Sam because I am smart and I have long hair. I am also like Joe because I like making plans. When I am playing zombies or capture the flag I make plans so we don't get tagged. I am not like Fred because I do not like taking action and I am not fearless. I do not take action because I don't like being the leader.

    3. The two things that make it fantasy are when Joe, Fred and Sam travel through the books on their summer reading list because Fred stuffed the summer reading list inside the book that Joe's uncle gave Joe. A green mist came out of the book and they began to travel through the books. They also encounter twenty bad guys from twenty different books on the list. When they wanted to get home they have to look for the time traveling book in order to get back home and if they couldn't find the traveling book they would be stuck in that time period forever.

    1. I really like your descriptions of the characters, Elias! It's funny that this book is about summer reading, and you were reading it for your summer reading. Did you want to travel into this book?

  12. Hello, this is Sydney and I read the book the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.
    2. One important part of the story is when Lucy goes to Narnia and meets the faun Tummus by the Lamppost. This is important because Tummus the faun told Lucy that the White Witch takes daughter of Eves and sons of Adams. Another important part is when Edmund meets the White Witch in her carriage. This is part is important because the White Witch asked Edmund to bring his brothers and sisters to Narnia, and he does. The last important part is the battle. This is important because Aslan defeats the White Witch and Narnia is set free.

    4. I would like to live in Narnia because there are now better rulers who live there. The new rulers are Peter, Edmund, Lucy, and Susan. It will also be a nice place to live.

  13. This is Aaliyah and I read The Mouse and the Motorcycle.
1.There are two main characters named Ralph and Keith. Ralph is a mouse that wants to ride a motorcycle and ends with it being lost and Keith being sick . Keith is a boy that is friends with a mouse . He lets him ride his motorcycle . They are not like me at all because they can understand each other and Keith and Ralph are boys and I am a girl. Keith lives in a hotel and I live in a house. Keith has no siblings and I have two siblings.
3.What makes it a fantasy is that a mouse can talk in a book and can ride a motorcycle. But, in real life a mouse cannot ride a motorcycle or talk. What can also make it a fantasy is that a boy can talk and understand a mouse and be friends in the book. But, in real life a boy can talk but the mouse cannot understand him.

    1. This is Erick M Delgado, I agree with Aaliyah because a mouse can't talk and can't ride a motorcycle. It really funny if a mouse can really ride a motorcycle.

3.Writing a biography can happen in school for an " All About Me " project,
for homework, or just for fun at recess!!

4.If I can change something about the story it would be that Rachel would of
been born first, it would be a 20 page biography, and that she would of had more friends.

  15. This is Erick M. Delgado, and I read The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.
3.Lucy is the main character of the story. She is the youngest of her siblings. She was curious, she likes to talk with the truth, she is nice, friendly, and likes to help others. I can say that she is like me because I am also curious, friendly, nice, and like to help others.

  16. Hi, this is Anabel and I read Poppy.
    1. The main character is Poppy. I would describe Poppy as adventurous because she still went home even though she knew Mr. Ocax could kill her just like he killed Ragweed. I think I am like Poppy because I am adventurous. I ride my bike with one hand.

    3. This is a fantasy book because animals like owls and mice can not talk. The main character Poppy drew a map and animas can not write or draw.

  17. 1. Who is the main character and how would you describe them? Are they like you at all? Why or why not?
Hi its Jolie and I read A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'engle. The main character is Meg. She is like me because she worries alot and I worry a lot too. If would describe Meg, I would say she is curious and worries a lot.

    4. Is the "world" that the author created one that you would like to live in? Why or why not Yes because its very mysterious and even by the title A Wrinkle In Time seems like the world or planet would be very adventurous!!! The world is very mysterious because there is a guy with red eyes that no one knows about. There is this witch that helps the red-eyed guy hypnotize people. It is adventurous because Meg has to look for her dad everywhere like when she looked for him at the school. I LOVE MYSTERIES AND ADVENTURE!!!

I would say that this is fantasy because mice cannot talk or draw.

I liked reading this book because it has adventures and fantasy at the same time.

  20. This is Erick M. Delgado, and I read Superfudge by Judy Blume.
    1. The main characters are Peter, Fudge's brother, and Fudge. Peter is in 5th grade and Fudge will be attending in the same school as Peter. Fudge wanted a talking bird and he got it. I am more like Fudge because I wanted a pet and I got it. I like pets like Fudge does.
    2. The three most important things are when Peter's mom tells him that he will have a baby sister, the second is when they moved from New York City to Princeton, the third is when Peter knew that his brother Fudge is going to his same school and he felt responsible for him. These are important because Peter feels sad and nervous of something new for him.
