Fantasy Summer Reading 2015

Welcome to our new fourth graders! This year for our summer reading, instead of doing a written report, you have the option of participating in a discussion online. I hope this will let us all see and respond to each other's thoughts about the book.

As a reminder, you need to begin each comment with the book you read, and should write your first name only under "Comment As." You should then write down the number of the questions you are answering, followed by your answer. Later on, you should check back and respond to another student's comment.

For your fantasy book, you need to answer two of the following questions:

1. Who is the main character and how would you describe them? Are they like you at all? Why or why not?

2. What do you think are the three most important things that happen in this book? Why are these the most important?

3. What in this book happens that makes it a fantasy? List at least two things, and be specific.

4. Is the "world" that the author created one that you would like to live in? Why or why not?

    1. Hi Antonio. I think the book you read was interesting because who can make things move by just sound effects.

What made you pick this book?

    2. Hi Jovonne, I picked this book because there was a mouse riding a motorcycle on the cover and it looked funny.

    3. I agree it is not possible that a mouse could talk

  3. The Mouse and the Motorcycle
Q.4.I would not like to live in that world because I would get jealous of Ralph because he got to ride on the motorcycle and I couldn't.

    1. I wouldn't want to live in that world either

    2. Ralph does have a lot of freedom! Do you think he should be allowed to ride a motorcycle? Or should there be conditions first, like you would need to be a certain age and pass a test first?

    3. I think Ralph should have taken driving lessons from Keith first.

    4. I read Poppy and it also was a story about a mouse. She is being chased by an owl named Mr. Ox. It is a story about a journey, she is trying to get to her new house.

    5. That's a great observation, Ivan, that the story is about a journey. That's a theme found in a lot of books! I love the science vocabulary you used when you answered question four, too. Don't forget to answer one more question!

  5. This is Jovonne Gonzalez and I read The Chronicles of Narina The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. .Lewis.

    3. The character, Lucy, was playing hide and go seek with her 3 siblings and was hiding in a wardrobe that lead her to another world called Narina. This shows an example of a fantasy because it is not a real thing to step into a wardrobe and be led to another world.

Another thing that happened in the book was that Lucy met a faun in Narina. A faun is a creature that is half human half goat. This another example of how it is a fantasy.

    4. I would not want to live in Narina because it is really cold and winter all year round and they do not celebrate Christmas.

    1. I like how you included a summary in your response, Jovonne! I agree that it would be said to miss out on Christmas. Have you read any other books with mythical creatures, like Pegasus or centaurs?

    2. No, I haven't but are there some you recommend?

    3. A lot of Greek and Roman myths have creatures like fauns in them. If you want to read the myths themselves, there are lots of books about them. One of my favorites is D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. There's also many novels where Greek mythology plays a role, especially since Percy Jackson (written by Rick Riordan) became so popular. Have you read any of his books?

    4. No, but I will ask my mom to take me to the library to check out some books about Greek and Roman myths. Thanks Mrs. Lindo.

  6. The Mouse and the Motorcycle Q#3 A: What makes this book a fantasy is that there are talking mice and mice don't talk like regular humans.Something else that makes this book a fantasy is the a mouse can ride a motorcycle and when your driving it's not natural that you will see a mouse on a motorcycle

  7. The Mouse and the Motorcycle Q#1 A: Ralph the mouse likes to take adventures and i like taking adventures even though sometimes i may be scared but fear is just something that holds you back. Ralph the mouse is very sneaky because he sneaked out to try out the motorcycle and i am a little sneaky when someone tells me not to done something in the back of my head i want to do it but i know not to.

  8. Poppy.
#4 The world the author created is a fantasy world in the animal kingdon where animals talk. I would not like to live in this word because I would be chased by an owl. I would have to always look out for predators.

  9. Poppy #2.The three most important things that happened in the book was
    1. Poppy was the daughter of the king Mouse. She was not supposed to go out the looking for a new house by herself because the Mr. Ox the Owl didn't let anyone leave . She left with Rye for a better home.
    2. Poppy become friends with a porcupine named Ereth. At first she was afraid because she thought porcupines ate mice but they eat mostly bark.
    3. Poppy ended up killing Mr. Ox with a needle.

These are important things because number one was the reason to start her journey to the new house. Two making friends with an enemy made poppy not afraid. Three killing Mr. Ox because he killed Rye.

  12. I would like to live in a world were mice can talk and steal things. That would be cool and awesome. A world were we could talk to animals and they could talk back would be amazing. This is David B on Sophia's laptop.
